He obtained a license in musicology at the Free University of Brussels in 1977, and defended in the same establishment a doctorate in philosophy and letters, option musicology in 1990: Polythematism and formal structure in the art of fugue, by which he developed his interest in baroque music, more specifically in the fugues of Johann Sebastian Bach, which he performed many times during his career as an organist.
