NAFE was founded in the late 1970s with the goal of fostering and teaching competent practise by PEs in the legal system while avoiding commercialism and emphasising ethics. The format of the presentations would be a series of lectures with examples of actual FE practise situations, followed by Technical Peer Review before publication. On May 25, 1982, the new NAFE corporation was filed in the District of Columbia [later moved to Virginia] after the governing documents were drafted. The Academy's first general meeting was held in San Francisco in January 1984, in conjunction with the NSPE meetings. Ninety FEs were in attendance, and detailed lectures on FE practise were given.
