The section speaks around 200 members in science, society and politics. Every year it organizes the renowned conference Molecular Biology of Plants in Dabringhausen. The largest group of experts in the German Botanical Society (DBG) unites all generations of researchers on a non-profit basis. In accordance with its statutes, the DGB supports research and teaching and promotes the next generation of knowledge-based people.

In Heidelberg the pooling of creative potential across traditional faculty boundaries was instituted at an early stage, notably by the creation of interdisciplinary research centres that have developed into veritable islands of excellence in a short space of time.
