According to the EPA, onsite wastewater treatment systems and technology, such as septic systems, are a viable long-term solution. The installation of gravity sewer mains and centralised treatment works is more expensive, so on-site treatment systems are used instead. On-site systems are built to last as long as possible with proper maintenance and management. Research and development are driving rapid changes in current technology. Regulators, designers, manufacturers, and contractors are required by federal and state regulations to stay up-to-date on the latest onsite wastewater industry developments and findings. Site-based systems are critical to the water cycle because they provide access to clean water. After it's been treated, sewage waste water is used to fill our household and municipal wells. On-site wastewater treatment has been a goal of the IOWWA since it was founded in 1999, and it continues to be today. With over 15,000 members, IOWWA is one of the nation's largest state wastewater associations. We have about 400 members, including regulators, installers, maintenance contractors, soil scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and educators. IOWWA is a diverse and well-balanced organisation because of the involvement of these people.
