For countless generations Canberra has been the meeting place of its original inhabitants, the Ngunnawal, Ngarigu and Ngambri peoples. Since 1927, it has been the seat of the federal government of the Australian Commonwealth. Cradled by wooded hills, this small modern city hosts numerous important national institutions. The Australian Parliament House, the National Gallery and Library, the National Museum and War Memorial are all set around the picturesque central lake named after the city’s designer, Walter Burley Griffin. The Australian National University occupies a 145-hectare campus in the heart of Canberra adjoining Black Mountain Reserve and the National Botanic Gardens. The ANU boasts a wide range of accommodation on- and off-campus, many excellent restaurants close by, abundant natural beauty and a peaceful and scholarly work environment. Summer is a great time to visit, when hot sunny days are tempered by cool clear nights. The Australian National University welcomes participants to the 18th World Sanskrit Conference, 10-14 January 2022. We are confident that your visit will be rewarding, enjoyable and stimulating.
