The Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA), founded in 1967, is the world's largest scholarly organisation dedicated to the study of modern archaeology (A.D. 1400-present). The society's main focus is the period from the beginning of European exploration. The Society for Historical Archaeology promotes scholarly research and knowledge dissemination in the field of historical archaeology. The society is particularly interested in the identification, excavation, interpretation, and conservation of land and underwater sites and materials. The society's geographical focus is on the New World, but it also includes European exploration and settlement in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The society's ethical principles are outlined in Article VII of its bylaws and in a statement adopted on June 21, 2003.
