The American Finance Association (AFA) is the world's leading academic organisation dedicated to the study and dissemination of financial economics knowledge. The AFA was conceived at a meeting in Philadelphia in December 1939. The first journal, American Finance, was published in 1942. (link to first issue). In August 1946, it was renamed The Journal of Finance and became a regular serial journal. Over time, the number of members of the association has steadily increased. Each January, the AFA hosts an annual meeting at which papers on a variety of financial topics are presented, and the current president of the AFA speaks on a chosen topic. The Association has officers and a board of directors who help make important decisions, as well as bylaws that govern those decisions.
