To represent the qualified astronomers in the United States, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) was founded in 1899 as a nonprofit organisation. We want to give professional astronomers a place where they can discuss, share, and understand the various facets of the Cosmos. AAS is the organization's acronym. Its headquarters are in Washington, DC, in the United States. A council of the society oversees the managerial aspects of this nonprofit organisation. For the next two years, David J. Helfand will preside over the Council as its president. The organisation organises a large number of well-attended events throughout the year to give its members a place to network effectively. January 2013 will see AAS Meeting No. 221 hosted by the organisation.
